“Thou shalt eat bread at my table continually.”— 2 Samuel 9:7
These are the words spoken by King David to Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan.
In this verse, we see David’s faithfulness to the covenant he made with Jonathan. Even after Jonathan’s death, David remembered his promise and extended kindness to his son.
Mephibosheth was lame in both feet, and he could not offer any benefit or service to the king. Yet David did not despise him. Instead, he honored him like one of his own sons and gave him a place at the king’s table.
As children of God, we can learn two important lessons here:
- Are we remaining faithful to the covenant we have made with God?
When we promise to walk in His ways, do we truly keep that promise?
- How do we treat others — especially those who may not seem worthy or equal to us?
Our attitude and behavior toward such people reveal the love of Christ in us.
If we, like David, show mercy, loyalty, and love even to those who cannot repay us, we will surely receive God’s everlasting grace.
May the Lord help us to live with such a heart. Amen. 🙏
